PANIC - An Original Short Story

She lay very still trying to work out what has woken her, disturbing the deep sleep she had been enjoying. Out of the corner of her eye she could see the illuminated dial on the bedside clock, it was 3.35 so she had been asleep for just over 4 hours.

She could hear nothing but could feel the hair on her body tingle as she sensed she was not alone, someone or something was in the room with her. She peered down the length of the bed and in the faint light that was penetrating the room from the moon nothing was visible. A glance to both sides and still nothing but she couldn't get rid of the feeling of panic that she was beginning to feel and the sense that she was sharing the room with something. She began to sit up and the covers dropped away and she suddenly remembered that she had not bothered with her nightdress. as it was such a warm night. Quickly she drew them up around her still looking around the dark room, and still seeing nothing.

Suddenly she felt a slight jerk on the cover and it was pulled back down revealing her naked body - she screamed in sheer terror. Something was crawling under the bottom of the duvet and she could feel the movement by her naked feet. She threw the covers from her and leaped from the bed, un-heeding of her nakedness she ran for the door and onto the landing, along the hall and into the guest room. She grabbed the phone from the bedside table and started to dial the emergency number.

The door, oh no she had left it wide open and as she turned towards it she saw 2 eyes glowing in the dark. She screamed again and realised the emergency operator was still was talking to her. The eyes were now advancing toward her as she tried in her fright to give details of her emergency. She sat on the bed and lifted her feet away from the advancing eyes, they reached the side of the bed and she suddenly realised that what ever it was was whimpering.

She reached for the bedside light and switched it on, suddenly all was revealed as the eyes disappeared to be replace by the sight of a cuddly black and white collie puppy trying to climb up onto the bed. She dropped the phone and reached down to pick him clasping him in her arms and to her chest; her face getting licked in gratification by a  long slobbering tongue. Suddenly she became aware that the emergency operator was still on the phone.

I am very sorry she heard herself saying in a small voice it was just my new puppy that I bought yesterday to protect myself from intruders.
